Gigondas as defined by Domaine de Font-Sane
To talk about Gigondas without talking about Véronique Cunty or Domaine de Font-Sane would be just wrong. I first tasted Véronique Cunty’s wines in 2005. It was a happy accident. Véronique is an incredible winemaker who started making wine with her father almost 30 something years ago. That’s more time than most of us have even been drinking wines! But such is her energy that it is right to call her a dynamic winemaker. Little surprise that her wines have earned a boat load of critical acclaim. But wines are not made for critics to pontificate about. These wines are to be enjoyed with friends. Fire up that grill and open up some Gigondas! You will go OMGSM!
The Tradition is a serious wine in itself. Mainly Grenache with some Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, the Gigondas Tradition is a captivating wine, rich, spicy, well-balanced, powerful and yet very elegant. The wine spends 6-8 months in oak cask in which a gently oxidation takes place, thus naturally and harmoniously increasing the aromatic complexity of this wine. This wine shows the brawniness of Gigondas with earthiness, gripping tannins, ample perfume and red fruits. The latter makes it a wine that is so drinkable now, but will reward patience in 8- 10 years developing complexity along the way. Buy a case and drink a couple every year and see how Gigondas can evolve.
The Terrasses des Dentelles is a truly special wine sourced from a 3 acre vineyard perched in the mountains. A wine of great class, pure, deep, from an exceptional terroir. This is sourced from Véroniques prized vineyards on the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a single site of terraced plot. These carved in limestone rocks have a very low yield. A complex wine full of spice, leather, meaty, tobacco, licorice, cedar, red and blue fruits, this is a big wine and yet epitomizes the power and perfume of Gigondas. If I were to drink this today, I would decant it for at least 2 hours.
