Papargyriou
Korinthia
Driving from the charming seaside town of Kiato towards Lalioti, the road takes quite rapidly into the surround hills. Since there are no markers indicating Jannis Papargyriou’s winery, it is quite easy to drive by it without realizing. It is good practice to call him before you head his way.
The elevation and the ideal vineyard location in Sofiana is responsible for the excellent wines made here. Jannis and his wife Elena are both viticulturists. They trained in Germany and have also been instructors at the University. While his wines are undeniably Greek, the influence of his training is very apparent in the long necked bottles he prefers as well as the remarkable balance and steely focus of his wines. One thing to recognize is that Jannis is truly a garagiste winemaker and his limited production wines have a very eager audience in Athens right across the isthmus!
Jannis and Elena are incredibly unassuming people and they let their wines speak for themselves. These wines from Korinthia are probably the finest examples of wines from Greece. Slowly but surely the critics are taking notice and Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate awarded 90 POINTS to his Unfiltered, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Assyrtiko- probably the only unfiltered white wine in Greece!
